Evolution of CALL

Hello there! So this entry I would like to touch about evolution of CALL, the search engine and online database.

Firstly, it can be divided into three which is behaviouristic, communicative and integrated CALL.

The criticism that integrated CALL receives are the quality of the authentic material varies between creators since different people have different styles and ideas. Therefore the content of the lesson or software used might vary from one educator to another. Other than that, the software that is used for integrated CALL is not tailor-made for ESL which causes the instructor to improvise their style or the content of the lesson. And lastly, the interactions over CMC may be authentic but prone to human mistakes. This is due to the fact that students have unlimited access to the software or programs especially social media and have the tendency to misuse them. 

            In conclusion, even though behavioristic and communicative CALL is considered out of fashion, they are still being widely used among teachers. Other than that, we can see that with the advancement of technology and the availability of the internet, many core ideas of CALL are changing as we can see in this chapter.  

Search engine and online database

Somehow, people easily get confused between a blogger and a search engine probably did not even know what database is. The truth is it all originated from world wide web (WWW)

Basically, www is a web tool that allows users to enter anything they want to search information on website contained in the database. the keywords inserted then is searched on the search engines such as Google or Yahoo. Database is the place where all the information from the web is stored and each database has its own database. Thus, the information that we search might yield different results for different browser.

There are four parts of search engines:

  • Database to store references to Webpages.
  • Web-Crawlers to find and compile indexes of Web Pages
  • User Interface of UI
  • Information Retrieval System (IRS)

Do you know we also have access to specialised search engines; it is tailored to search specific area such as researches, articles, journals, encyclopaedia etc.

Other than that,  we have MetaSearch Engine. It matches the user's query to multiple search engines such as MetaCrawler, SavvySearch and Dogpile.

To be concluded, the technology evolution has given big impact in both terms, searching for information and storage. I get that most of all information can be obtained within Internet, as long as you know which and what source you going to choose in getting the specific data or information.

In a nutshell

Now we have hit the ver last part on Internet Technology subject, I shall say it is a huge relieve but having time learning with Madam Azidatun is such a pleasure. Thank you for assigning the quiz by end of the semester too hehehe. To be honest, I'm not a tech-savvy but my curiosity is at its best so it is fun and interesting for gaining knowledge learning this course. I have better preview on CALL topic, how to create a courseware using SmartBuilder, podcast and Powtoon. Most of the tasks given were homework so I was also struggling with time management this semester, glad I made it! Wohoo! Podcast

I ever heard of podcast but never really knew what does it means. Well then, this class taught me that basically podcast is an audio or video file (mp3, mp4 etc) that is published or "broadcast" on the internet. The funny thing is I know what it is as I get engaged with the internet but the term itself I seldom used. During the lecture, I discover that it is used to promote self-study and independent learning which made it compatible material to be used with CALL.  So let's move to the advantage of using podcast. As a degree student, I would recommend using podcast for study because it is accessible as long as you have had good internet connection. Whenever and wherever you are, you still can gain knowledge and information.
