Introduction to CALL; Computer Assisted Language Learning
CALL is a term used to refer to the area of technology and second language teaching and learning. It refers to method of application of the computer to assist in language teaching and language learning. Furtermore, it heavily involves material designs, technologies, pedagogical theories and modes of instruction. CALL covers any process in which learners have to use computers in order to learn a language; this process helps learners to improve their language capabilities and proficiency.
1. CALL - Specific Software
Have you ever played duolingo or used a prezi before? Duolingo and prezi are the example of CALL Specific Software (CSS). CSS is the applications and programs designed specifically to facilitate language learning. It could include web-based exercises, ELT-Software and language games.
2. Generic Software
These are the software originally installed in your computer the first time you purchased it. Microsoft Word, Pages, Power Point, Keynote.
3.Web-based Learning Software
Web-based learning software is applications and sites on the internet which are co-opted for use as tools for language teaching and learning.

4. Computer Mediated Communication
CMC – application or website designed to facilitate online communication, could be divided into two types : synchronous and asynchronous.
Thus, I can conclude that computer function as tutor and teaching aid for language drills and practice. Then, it used as a tool for writing, presenting and research, not replacement for skills and lastly, as the medium for global communication.
